Dinosaur stamp

Philatelists interested in a particular subject are very exciting and exceptional people. They collect specific postage stamps, covers, post cards, postmarks and other types of philatelic goods. A lot of collectors devote their collections to the past of the Earth.

Unfortunately, the dinosaurs did not live together with human beings, but people have been always dreamed of seeing these giant and beautiful creatures. Scientists explore the remains of dinosaurs and simulate their appearance. When we hold a dinosaur stamp, we touch our past. For example, North Korea issued Dinosaurs souvenir sheet on June 16, 2010:dinosaur-stamp-4

Each stamp in this set is a dinosaur stamp.

People are attracted by a distant past that they can only imagine. Earth's past is a quite interesting subject for postage items. For example, Ediacaran Fossils of Namibia FDC was issued on August 8, 2008, in Namibia:dinosaur-stamp-7

There are a geological time scale of Earth history and fossils on the cover and stamps respectively.

Quite unusual set of stamps and FDC showing some pieces of rock painting was issued on June 27, 2008, in Namibia:dinosaur-stamp-6

There are stamps with the images of ancient animals’ remains and fossils. For example, January 2, 2010 Germany issued a dinosaur stamp showing only its skeleton. This stamp is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, where the skeleton of a dinosaur is kept.dinosaur-stamp-2

August 11, 2011, Germany issued a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of Archaeopteryx:

Archaeopteryx is an extinct bird of the Jurassic.

There are stamps dedicated to scientists who study our past as well. Thus, June 23, 1999, Czech Republic issued souvenir sheet called Joachim Barrande and Czech Trilobites:dinosaur-stamp-1

This souvenir sheet is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the French paleontologist and geologist Joachim Barrande, who made a detailed study of Lower Palaeozoic rocks of the Central and Western Bohemia.

Philatelists who collect postal items displaying facts about the Earth’s past should pay their attention to the First Day Cover (FDC). For example, Dinosaurs FDC was issued on September 5, 2011, in North Korea:dinosaur-stamp-5

It looks like a perfect whole: cover and stamps contain images of dinosaurs, while postmark is dinosaur-shaped.

Collecting of stamps and other postage items on a particular subject requires a lot of time and energy, especially if collector wants a particular dinosaur stamp or fossil stamp. We share collectors’ passion for the past of the Earth and believe we will be very helpful in such difficult yet interesting work.
